Self Injury

Self Injury Foundation http://selfinjuryfoundation.org/
Research, Education, Advocacy & Support

Self-Injury is also known as: Parasuicide, Deliberate Self Harm, Self-Abuse, Self-Mutilation, Self Inflicted Violence, Cutters

Non Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) was coined in an effort to distinguish Suicidal Self-injury (e.g. self harm designed to end one's life) from Non suicidal Self-Injury (e.g. self-harm designed as a coping strategy). This term is consistently utilized by researchers and will most likely become the predominant term for this class of behaviors. The definition of NSSI is the deliberate harming of one's body, resulting in tissue damage, without the intent of suicide, and  is not culturally sanctioned by the society in which one lives.

Nutrition Guidelines

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the federal government's evidence-based nutritional guidance to promote health, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity through improved nutrition and physical activity was released in January. Because more than one-third of children and more than two-thirds of adults in the U.S. are overweight or obese, the Guidelines places stronger emphasis on reducing calorie consumption and increasing physical activity. Americans are encouraged to consume more healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products, and seafood, and to consume less sodium, saturated and trans fats, added sugars, and refined grains.
