Community Alliance for Teen Safety (CATS) was founded in 1996 after 9 teenagers lost their lives in car crashes within a short span
of time in Derry, NH. Community members started a grassroots effort to
determine the cause of these tragedies. The Community Alliance for Teen Safety
was formed as a result of this effort. Inexperience and lack of seat belt use
was determined to be the cause of these teen deaths. CATS continues to be a
force in the community that addresses high-risk behaviors.
CATS operates by securing grants and donations. The organization has received state, municipal,
foundation, and federal grants to support its programs as well as private
donations. It is a non-profit corporation recognized under Section 501 (C) (3)
of the Internal Revenue Code.
